ABOUT THIS PROCEDURE
What Is Outpatient Hip Replacement?
Outpatient hip replacement means the patient has surgery in the morning and goes home that afternoon or evening — rather than spending one or more nights in the hospital. It takes place at an ambulatory surgery center rather than a traditional hospital setting.
Thanks to the anterior approach, modern anesthesia protocols, and multimodal pain management, same-day hip replacement is not only possible but often preferable for appropriate candidates. Patients sleep in their own bed, recover in a familiar environment, and avoid hospital-acquired infections. It is certainly less expensive than surgery in a hospital as well, though how much each individual patient pays is highly insurance dependent.
HOW IT WORKS
What Makes Same-Day Surgery Possible?
01
Anterior Approach
The muscle-sparing anterior technique causes far less tissue trauma than traditional approaches, dramatically reducing post-operative pain and allowing for same-day discharge.
02
Modern Anesthesia
Advanced anesthesia protocols minimize post-operative nausea, grogginess, and discomfort — allowing patients to be alert and mobile within hours of surgery.
03
Multimodal Pain Control
A combination of nerve blocks, anti-inflammatories, and targeted medications reduces reliance on heavy narcotics, keeping patients comfortable and functional at home. Many patients take NO narcotics.
WHY PATIENTS CHOOSE THIS
Benefits of Outpatient Hip Replacement
🛏️
Sleep in Your Own Bed
Recover in the comfort and familiarity of your own home from day one without being woken up many times like staying in the hospital.
⚡
Faster Recovery
Patients in familiar environments with loved ones nearby often recover more quickly.
🛡️
Fewer Infection Risks
Avoiding hospital stays reduces exposure to hospital-acquired infections.
🏆
Proven Safe
Studies show outpatient joint replacement has comparable or better outcomes than inpatient surgery for appropriate patients.
💰
Lower Cost
Ambulatory surgery centers have lower facility fees than hospital stays. Some insurances may penalize you for doing surgery at the hospital when not necessary.
🧘
Less Stress
Patients report less anxiety when recovering at home vs. in a hospital environment.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is outpatient joint replacement safe?
A: Yes — when patients are properly selected and prepared. Multiple studies have shown that outpatient joint replacement has comparable or better complication rates versus inpatient surgery for appropriate patients.
Q: What happens if I need to stay overnight?
A: Patient safety always comes first. If during your surgery or recovery Dr. Weidner or the anesthesia team determines it is safer for you to stay overnight, arrangements will be made. This is rare but always an option.
Q: Do I need someone at home with me?
A: Yes — you must have a responsible adult at home with you for at least the first 24 hours overnight the first night after outpatient surgery. This is a requirement for same-day discharge.
Q: Will my insurance cover outpatient joint replacement?
A: Yes, if your insurance would cover joint replacement at the hospital they will cover outpatient joint replacement at accredited ambulatory surgery centers. In fact, some insurance plans penalize patients for using higher cost facilities for their procedures, and hospitals are always more expensive than surgery centers. Our office team will verify your benefits prior to surgery and walk you through any cost-related questions.
